Shhhh, It's a Secret............Therapeutic Arts Class at TCU

Inspired by Frank Warren's Book Secrets, my students in Therapeutic Arts Class created these works of art. It is  an open enrollment course for undergrads and grads at TCU that explores the therapeutic qualities of art and how art therapy is used to heal, in different institutional and community settings.

These are some of the secrets my students chose to share with the  class and now you.

  1. What a great way for people to release their burdensome secrets complete with emotion and passion while still remaining anonymous.

  2. Last month I watched, quite by accident, a movie with Ben Affleck from around 2006 called "Man About Town". I hadn't heard of it but I settled on it while flipping through channels when I couldn't sleep. At any rate, in the movie he's a Hollywood talent agent who's enrolled in a journal writing class. The thoughts his character expresses as he learns the process go from the most rudimentary to more and more profound especially as he hits some pretty major bumps in the road. It helps him channel his emotions and deal with the complexities of his life in a definitive manner. It was just a movie but it made a compelling case for creative expression as a means to dealing with life. I think that real art classes like this one being taught at TCU are valuable tools for society. It's like a lot of things in both life and art, the process is more important than the result. Although the results seen here are pretty cool.

  3. I love it! Have you checked out post-secret? It's a project with a similar idea, and I think there is at least 1 compilation book out now.
